Nicki Vowls trained in Printed Textiles at Camberwell School of Art, and then attended Goldsmiths for her postgraduate year. Her work focuses on local heroes and their true stories.

Throughout Nicki Vowls' work she returns to the exploits of our heroic lifeboatmen, and their rescues from the Goodwin Sands and the waters around the East Kent coast. Most of the lifeboat prints come with a story of the rescue as it happened at the time.

She has depicted episodes from the First World War, and also the daring rescues by local boats and boatmen during Operation Dynamo, from the beaches of Dunkirk in 1940. The phases of the moon and their effect upon the tides, and celestial navigation at sea are also starting points.

Nicki Vowls likes to explore printing on different materials, including paper, wood, hand dyed fabric. and weathered sailcloth, which has a unique history of its own.

Visitors are always made welcome at the Salty Dog Studio. Just contact Nicki Vowls through this website to make an appointment.
